Nuova Academia Di Belle Arti

Study interior design in Italy! There are exciting opportunities for design studies for furniture, lighting, and Italian commercial spaces at the Nuova Academia De Bella Arti in Milano. Students will be exposed to international design trends and European tradition of art, architecture and culture. From theory to practice: Students are guided through a broad cultural and historical overview of Italian interior design practices. Simultaneously in the studio they will be asked to apply this European approach in a concentrated short-term project. Students will have the opportunity to visit studios, showrooms and meet international architects and designers. Earn up to six credits towards your undergraduate or mater’s degree in interior design, while experiencing some of Italy’s most beautiful cities, Venice, Florence and Rome.

An interior designer’s education process is enriched by the exposure to other cultures, appreciation of the arts and understanding of architectural history. For many people, Italy, the mother of the arts, is a museum-country where the masterpieces born of Antiquity, Christian and humanist culture are preserved. One must experience Italy’s landscape, the Tuscan countryside, with its hills and valleys, laced with rows of cypress trees and umbrella pines and the gondolas dancing on the Grand Canal in Venice.

The interior design study abroad program is exciting, enjoyable and an intense educational experience.

Independent Study or Studio (3 credits)

Three credits of independent study or studio will be discussed and approved by the Interior Design Program Director. Graduate students may consider the History and Style Studio and undergraduate students may consider a Humanities or Art History elective. An independent topic of study and proposal would need to be approved prior to departure. The student would submit a written proposal for their project and set up a contract outlining what will be completed by the end of the summer session. The proposal will help the student focus on their subject once they are in Italy. In addition students will be required to keep a sketchbook-journal compiled from personal writing, collage and on-site drawings. The projects and journals will be presented to the students and faculty in the Fall 2004 semester.
