The Suffolk University Semester in Prague Program is a one- or two-semester long program, available in both the fall and spring terms. The program is offered in cooperation with the Philosophical (Liberal Arts) Faculty of Charles University, one of the oldest (founded in 1348) and most prestigious institutions of higher learning in Central Europe.
The curriculum includes three core courses (4 credits each): a) Czech history, culture, and politics, b) American studies from a European/Czech perspective, and c) Ethnicity and National Identity in Czechoslovakia and Central Europe. It also includes two electives (4 credits) in American or European literature/humanities or social sciences. A three-week Survival Czech course and cultural excursions and events form part of the program. In sum, students receive 16 credits for these courses: three letter grades (12 credits) and one non-letter grade (4 credits).
The Suffolk University semester study abroad program at Charles University is based in the capital of the Czech Republic, Prague. It is unquestionably one of Europe’s most beautiful and romantic cities. Prague is a cosmopolitan, very English-friendly environment, so students should encounter no serious linguistic difficulties even off campus.
The Czech Republic has been, since 1993, a parliamentary democracy, with human rights and press freedoms consistent with those enjoyed in the U.S. and European Union states. In January 2000, the Czech Republic became a full member of NATO, and in May 2004, the Czech Republic became a full member of the European Union.
The director of the semester study abroad program is Dr. David Robbins, Professor of European History and Associate Dean of Suffolk University’s College of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Robbins was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in 1994 to teach at Charles University in Prague, where in 1998 he was appointed visiting director of the American Cultural Studies program at the Department of English and American Studies. The associate director and program manager in Prague is Ms. Marcela Janíčková, M.A. in Political Science and in American Studies.
Students participating in the program pay full tuition to, and receive academic credit from, Suffolk University in Boston. All core and elective courses in the study abroad program are taught in English by Suffolk University faculty members or by members or alumni of the Philosophical Faculty’s various departments. Participating students stay in Charles University’s centrally located Komenského dormitory for international students (15 minutes from school). They pay for their accommodation directly to the dormitory. No meal plan is available at the dormitory; students prepare their own food, eat in student cafeterias (refectories) of their choice, or eat in restaurants.
Students are responsible for purchasing the air ticket on their own. This arrangement enables them to buy it for the cheapest price possible at the moment when they have firmly committed themselves to participate in the program.
If you are interested in the program, please visit Study Abroad office and collect an application.
You need to complete and hand it in by May 1 (for the fall semester) or by November 1 (for the spring semester).
