PHOTOJOURNALISM IN TUSCANIA, ITALY 2011

May 15-June 4, 2011

CJN-398-TC- 3 Credits

Based at the Lorenzo de’ Medici School campus in the walled medieval town of Tuscania, in the Italian countryside between Rome and Florence, the class teaches students professional photography techniques for use in photojournalism and fine art applications. Students perform assignments designed to introduce them to working methods in the field, camera handling, social documentation, and post shoot production and produce a final photo essay project on a topic approved by the instructor.

Visits with overnight stays to Florence and Rome including a special guided tour of the Alinari Museum of Photography in Florence and an LdM faculty led introduction to Florence, and visits to must photograph sights for photographers in Rome including; the Old Forum, St. Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Museum, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, and much more. We also visit the old Roman port of Ostia to photograph what ancient Rome would have looked like. Tivoli, and Emperor Hadrian’s Villa east of Rome that includes spectacular vistas, fountains, pools, statuary and architecture. Other sites visits are included.

In Tuscania visits to Etruscan caves and tombs are included, a European equestrian show, and private boat tour of Lake Bolsena. Most importantly students have the opportunity to meet Italian citizens and photograph their lives away from the student and tourist sites of many other study abroad classes in Italy.

Students curate their own photography exhibit at the Lorenzo de’Medici school gallery and invite the residents of Tuscania and students and faculty from other universities in residence to the show opening. This starts students early on in their careers with a first exhibit in Italy and hopefully a foot hold in the European and International art world of the future.
