As one of its Unity Week 2009 programs, the Office of International Student Programming recently screened the documentary “Through Indian Eyes: 1-800-INDIA” which examines the global business phenomenon of offshore outsourcing and its affect on Indians who work in the industry.
Graduate and undergraduate students from India, Senegal, Burkina Faso, China, the Central African Republic and the United States of America, gathered with Psychology Professor Sukanya Ray, and Accounting Professors Laurie Pant and Jimmy Mistry to not only view the documentary, but also engage in a spirited discussion of the issues it raises over lunch in the CIE conference room.
Outsourcing has sparked an economic boom in Indian, but it has also led some Indians to examine the very nature of the lives they live as they balance traditional Indian values with Western-style social and economic mores. Produced for PBS-TV’s Wide Angle series, “Through Indian Eyes: 1-800-INDIA” explores the experiences of Indians professionals working long hours and late-night shifts in a Westernized work environment and shows the human and cultural impact of a controversial, but still thriving global economic trend.
