InterFuture, an invitation-only program, is an honors program offering you individualized preparation for, and one-on-one experience in, study abroad. This approach personalizes, intensifies and magnifies the impact of your exposure to new political, social, economic and cultural environments.
Students are first identified and recruited to learn about the program at the beginning of the second semester of their sophomore year, for eventual foreign study in the second semester of their junior year. Suffolk University students are recruited to apply (from both the College and the Business School) based on GPA and class rank. Occasionally, outstanding freshman or interested students may apply based on the strong recommendation of a faculty member familiar with the program.
InterFuture scholars undertake an intensive experience in intercultural study. During an eight-month preparatory period, students prepare an intercultural independent study project with the help of a faculty adviser on campus and a series of InterFuture conferences. Students conduct research at home and then abroad, if possible, in both a North Atlantic and a Third World nation. Study locales include:
The InterFuture program has designated 3 study themes around which InterFuture Scholars may design their projects:
Residing overseas for three to seven months, InterFuture Scholars become immersed in the host culture(s)– studying in each country under a local expert and living with local families and students. The research papers prepared by InterFuture participants are submitted to their home institutions for appropriate academic credit, usually equivalent to that which they would have earned at the home campus, during the semester(s) they were abroad.
InterFuture students always live with a host family for at least two weeks of their stay. For the remaining weeks, students may live with a family, in student housing or in private lodgings. Students choose host cities or neighborhoods in light of the needs of their project.
