From the moment students first come to SUMC, they find a warm welcome in Madrid. There is always something interesting going on! During orientation students become acquainted with the university neighborhood as well as the historical Madrid de los Austrias, with walking tours to show them around and explain a bit of Madrid’s past.

Another part of the initiation process is getting used to the city’s subway system, which most students manage with ease after just a few rides. A priority for students is settling into their living arrangements, and getting used to using a telefonillo as well as trying out new foods and dishes.

In Student Activities there is hiking, biking, horseback riding, a bullfight, a flamenco show, language exchanges, a film club, a tapas tour, visits to El Rastro, rollerblading in El Retiro Park, and other opportunities, such as volunteering.

The Student Council takes an active role in campus life, with event planning that includes everything from organizing debates and election night lock-ins to holiday dances and fund raisers for local charities.

SUMC weekend excursions take place every month, and students can choose from trips to a variety of Spain’s diverse regions, from the lush green north to the hills of Andalucía dotted with olive-trees and mountains, with expert local guides and a more in-depth look at how the locals lived in times gone by and how they live today.
