Step 1: Registering through College Board

Test takers must first register and purchase a CLEP exam through College Board. As of July 1st 2017, the cost to purchase a CLEP exam through College Board will be $85. After this is complete, College Board will provide you with a registration ticket number. Once you have received this ticket number, you can now request to reserve a seat at Suffolk University’s CLEP testing center. Please remember to print your registration ticket number, as you will need to bring it with you on the day of your exam.

Step 2: Reserving your seat to take the CLEP exam

Once you have successfully registered for your CLEP exam through College Board and received your registration ticket number, if you wish to proceed with taking the CLEP exam on one of the scheduled dates that Suffolk has to offer, you will need to fill out and hand in a registration form in addition to paying a $30 non-refundable CLEP test center fee. You can obtain a registration form by coming into the Division of Student Success, located in the Stahl Building on the 9th floor of 73 Tremont St. If you are unable to come to Suffolk, you can either call 617-573-8034 or email

Please take into consideration that Suffolk’s CLEP test center has a limited amount of seats available. Seats are on a first come first serve basis. Please be advised, submitting the registration form and test center fee does not guarantee a reservation confirmation. You will receive a confirmation email once your registration has been approved.

For additional information on the CLEP exam, please visit College Board's Information for Test-Takers.

Testing Fees

Suffolk's CLEP test center fee is $30 per exam. Students may take more than one CLEP exam per day, but please note that the $30 test center fee is per exam. The test center fee is non-refundable and must be paid upon registration. The only payment method accepted is a money order made out to Suffolk University. Personal checks, credit card and cash are not accepted for the test center fee.

Arrivals without proper payment methods will not be able to take the test.

An unofficial score report can be printed out upon request prior to taking your exam with the exception of the College Composition exam. The College Board provides a timeline for the scoring of the College Composition essay portion.

After tests are completed, all scoring information is submitted to The College Board. For scoring information, please contact them at 800-257-9558.

The waiting period to retake a CLEP exam is three months.

Senior Status

Suffolk students must complete their final 30 credits at Suffolk. If you are a Suffolk student with senior status, you are not eligible to receive CLEP credit. Students with senior status who petition for an exception to this policy must submit a Senior Petition Form (PDF) to be approved by the Undergraduate Advising Center. If you have any questions please feel free to contact the Undergraduate Advising Center at 617-573-8034

If you are not a Suffolk student, you should check with your institution to determine your eligibility to take a CLEP exam.
