There are many opportunities for students to earn scholarships for study abroad from both our overseas partners as well as national scholarship programs. Deadlines vary and students must apply directly for these scholarships.   

Santander Universities Scholars Program

This program, generously funded by Santander Bank, is a scholarship exclusively for Suffolk University students studying abroad in approved international academic programs.  Available to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences or the Sawyer School of Business, priority is given to students with a cumulative GPA of 3.0, with proven financial need (as determined by the Office of Student Financial Services), and a permanent address in the following states: Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island.  No separate application is required for this scholarship.  All eligible students who are accepted to an approved study abroad program will be considered. Students must actually participate in the program abroad in order to receive the scholarship.

David. L. Boren Scholarship

The National Security Education Program funds the David L. Boren scholarship for undergraduate students.  NSEP was created in 1991 to provide scholarships for American undergraduate students who aspire to study in world regions critical to U.S. interests. Students must be engaging in a study abroad experience in a country outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand.The national application deadline is early February. Benjamin Gilman Scholarship

The Gilman Scholarship Program seeks to diversify the kinds of students who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go. Specifically, the Gilman Program offers scholarships for students who have been traditionally underrepresented in education abroad. For additional information, please visit the website.

Freeman Asia Scholarship Program

The primary goal of Freeman Awards for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA) is to increase the number of U.S. undergraduates who study in East and Southeast Asia, by providing them with the information and financial assistance they will need.Award recipients are expected to share their experiences with their home campuses to encourage study abroad in East and Southeast Asia by others, and to spread greater understanding of Asian peoples and cultures within their home communities. National Italian American Foundation Scholarships

The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) awards scholarships and grants to outstanding students for use during the following academic year. The awards will be made on the basis of academic merit and divided between two groups of students: Italian American students who demonstrate outstanding potential and high academic achievements. Area of study: open;  Students from any ethnic background majoring or minoring in Italian language, Italian studies, Italian American studies or a related field, who demonstrate outstanding potential and high academic achievements. Chinese Ministry of Education Scholarships

The Ministry of Education, Republic of China, funds a scholarship to grant support and recognition to outstanding foreign students studying for up to one year in university-affiliated Chinese Language Centers in Taiwan. For additional information, please visit the website.
