College and Business alumni meet and expand their network
Thursday, March 20, 2008
College and Business alumni met at The Kinsale Irish Pub & Restaurant to reconnect with former classmates, meet new friends, and expand their professional network during March's monthly social. Complimentary hors d'oeuvres were served.Facilitated by seasoned senior loan officer and Suffolk alumnus David Murray, JD'02, this "Life 101" workshop provided more than 30 alumni with a valuable introduction to the "business" of home buying and refinancing. Alumni learned about industry jargon, different loan types, and received an overview of how a sub prime meltdown may affect their ability to buy. The last program in the "Life 101" series, Estate Planning, is scheduled for Thursday, April 10.
December’s 1st Thursday provided an opportunity to not only reconnect with former classmates, but also to celebrate the holiday season. The Living Room’s candle-lit lounge and comfy sofas was the place to be. Nearly 70 Law alumni attended this annual event.
More than 20 law alumni and 30 law students attended an alumni-led panel presentation entitled "Starting Your Own Practice." John Anastasi, JD ’94 and Thomas Sullivan, JD ’94 of Lowrie, Lando, & Anastasi LLP presented the "nuts and bolts" of starting a practice as well as offered insights based on their experience. Attorney Anastasi and Attorney Sullivan invited five colleagues who had been instrumental in helping them launch the practice to participate in the presentation. The session is one of several workshops co-sponsored by the Alumni Association in partnership with the Law School Office of Financial Aid.
Former resident assistants (RAs) gathered at the Holiday Inn Government Center to celebrate an important milestone—more than a decade of residence life at Suffolk. The evening provided an opportunity to reminisce about “the good old days” of living in the residence halls and to rekindle old friendships. Following brief remarks by several members of the Suffolk Community, including Maureen Wark, Director of Residence Life and Summer Programs and Dean Nancy Stoll, alumni enjoyed a delicious dessert bar and dancing.
They didn’t have to save the world in a day like Jack Bauer does on the popular TV show 24, but writers, directors, and actors eager to reclaim the spotlight teamed up with budding artists to write, rehearse, and perform a series of 10-minute plays at Suffolk’s 24-Hour Play Festival.
Spearheaded by Theatre Coordinator Nora Long, the 24-Hour Play Festival provided the unique opportunity for Suffolk’s young alumni and current students with a passion for performance and theatre to work together to create a remarkable production. Professor Long explained "This is the first time we have brought our alumni and students together to create a theatrical event. We hope to create many more opportunities like this in the future."
Plays were written, rehearsed, and performed in a 24 hour period. A handful of props, including a table and two chairs and a children’s tricycle, served as inspiration for writers as they crafted their masterpieces. A lack of sleep prompted actors to occasionally ad lib a couple of lines; shocking audience members and keeping them at the edge of their seats. Each of the four plays was geared towards a college audience.
To celebrate the success of the opening and closing performances, which unlike any other production occurred in the same day, festival participants were joined by Theatre Department faculty and staff for a Cast Party sponsored by the Alumni Association.
