Two Suffolk baseball players were selected to the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Coaches Association All-New England team for 2007. Junior Nick Martinho was named second team as a first baseman. Junior Greg DiMarco was named third team as an outfielder.
Martinho, from Middleton, MA, hit .364 so far this season. He scored 37 runs and had 47 hits with eight doubles, two triples and six home runs on the year. He drove in 33 runs for the Rams.
DiMarco, from Newton, MA, hit .414 so far this season. He scored 30 runs and had 48 hits with four doubles, two triples and two home runs. He drove in 22 runs for the Rams.
Seven Suffolk baseball players were honored with All-Conference selection in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference. Four players received first team honors, Nick Martinho, Greg DiMarco, Jeison King and Marc Exarhopoulos. Three players were selected to the second team, Kevin Silva, Steve Durant and Reid Jackson.
Martinho, a junior catcher/firstbaseman from Middleton, MA, hit .348 in GNAC games and .358 overall so far this season. DiMarco, a junior outfielder from Newton, MA, hit .400 in GNAC play and lead the team with an overall batting average of .406. King, a junior outfielder from Lowell, MA, hit .341 in conference games and .355 overall. Exarhopoulos, a senior designated hitter, hit .390 in conference play and .367 overall.
Suffolk was the GNAC runnerup in both the regular season and in the conference tournament.
Silva is a sophomore catcher/first baseman from Hull, MA. Durant is a junior pitcher from Malden, MA and Jackson is sophomore pitcher from Burlington, MA.
Juniors Pedro Soares and Chris Delisi were named to the 2007 Great Northeast Athletic Conference first team in men’s tennis.
Soares, from Sao Paulo, Brazil, played No. 1 singles for the Rams. He finished with a 5-2 overall singles record, 4-0 in GNAC matches. He was undefeated in doubles, 6-0 overall, 5-0 in GNAC matches. He teamed with Delisi for most of his doubles matches.
Delisi, from Gloucester, MA, played No. 2 singles for the Rams. He finished with a 9-2 overall record in singles and was 5-0 in GNAC matches. In doubles, Delisi had an 8-1 overall record, 4-0 in GNAC play.
The Rams finished the season with an 8-3 overall record and finished second in the GNAC standings at 4-1. They lost in the GNAC tournament semifinals to end their season.
Suffolk sophomore Jess Ferreira was named to the honorable mention Division III All-New England team as a Utility player by the New England Softball Coaches Association. She finished the season hitting .438 with 49 hits in 112 at-bats with six homeruns, six triples and eight doubles. She had 30 pitching appearances for a 12-15 record.
Suffolk sophomore pitcher/infielder Jess Ferreira was named the 2007 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Player of the Year. Ferreira was the 2006 GNAC Rookie of the Year and a 2006 Louisville Slugger National Fast Pitch Coaches Association second team All-American at second base.
In 2007, Ferreira (Cambridge, MA) had 30 appearances on the mound for a 12-15 overall record. She hit .438 on the season with 49 hits in 112 at-bats. She finished with six homeruns, six triples and eight doubles. She had a .964 fielding percentage. When she wasn’t pitching, Ferreira played shortstop for the Rams.
Suffolk finished the 2007 season with a 15-22 overall record, 10-12 in the GNAC, tied for sixth place.
Ferreira currently ranks 31st nationally in Divison III softball in strikeouts per seven inning games with 7.8. She ranks 51st nationally in slugging percentage at .777. She finished with a 3.94 ERA, pitching 164.1 innings with 181 strikeouts.
Sophomore pitcher/infielder Jess Ferreira was named to the first team softball Great Northeast Athletic Conference All-Conference team. Two players were named to the softball second team, Ashley Gaboriault and Valerie Liberatore.
Ferreira, a sophomore from Cambridge, MA, hit .438 on the season and .465 in GNAC games this year. She had a 3.94 ERA with a 12-15 record. She pitched in 30 of Suffolk’s 37 games with 181 strikeouts on the season. When she was not on the mound, Ferreira played shortstop and had a .964 fielding percentage.
Second team players included Gaboriault, a sophomore from Sutton, MA and Liberatore, a freshman from Chelsea, MA. Gaboriault led the team in hitting with a .440 batting average, .485 in GNAC games. Liberatore hit .333 on the season, .362 in GNAC games.
Suffolk junior forward Dan Pencinger was named to the 2006-07 New England Hockey Writers Association Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast All-Star team.
Pencinger, from Randolph, NJ, scored 21 goals during the season with 19 assists for 40 points. He helped Suffolk to a 7-15-2 overall record, 6-8-1 in the ECAC Northeast. Pencinger was also an ECAC Northeast All-Conference second team member.
The 13 All-Stars will be honored at the New England Hockey Writers Annual Awards Banquet, on Wednesday, April 11, at the Prince Restaurant on Route 1, in Saugus, MA.
Three Suffolk hockey players were named to the 2006-07 Eastern College Athletic Conference All-Academic team. Senior John Delaney, sophomore Mitch Sabo and sophomore Scott Zanolli were selected to the All-Academic ECAC Northeast team.
Delaney (Quincy, MA) is a three-time All-Academic selection. Sabo (Bell Canyon, CA) and Zanolli (Tracey, CA) are first time honorees.
This marks the fifth year that the conference has named an all-academic team; a total of 69 student-athletes representing each of the 16 ECAC Northeast teams earned this honor based on outstanding performance in the classroom.
To be named to the all-academic team, the student-athlete must have completed at least one academic year, have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale, and have competed in at least one-half of his team’s contests during the current season.
Two Suffolk hockey players were selected to the All-ECAC Northeast team. Junior forward Dan Pencinger was named to the second team and sophomore forward John Rocchio was selected honorable mention for the 2006-07 season.
Pencinger, from Randolph, NJ, was named to the second team All-ECAC Northeast. He finished the season with 40 points, 21 goals and 19 assists for a 1.67 points per game average, 15th in the nation. Pencinger was 9th in goals per game nationally with 0.88.
Rocchio, from East Greenwich, RI, was named to the honorable mention All-ECAC Northeast team. He finished the season with 43 points, 13 goals and 30 assists for a 1.87 points per game average, sixth in the nation. Rocchio was fourth in assists per game nationally with 1.3 per game.
The Rams finished the 2006-07 season with a 7-15-2 overall record, and a ninth place finish in the ECAC Northeast.
Suffolk senior guard John Murphy was selected to the 2006-07 Great Northest Athletic Conference Men’s All-Conference first team. Murphy was also a first team All-GNAC his junior season.
A North Reading, MA native, Murphy is averaging 23.7 points per game and ranks in the top five in Division III.
Senior Jenn Fogg and freshman Stephanie Zito were selected to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference third team. Fogg, a forward from Stonington, CT averages 4.9 rebounds per game and 7 points per game. Zito, a guard from Guilford, CT, averages 12.9 points per game and 4.1 rebounds per game.
Jennifer Nelson, Suffolk’s No. 1 women’s singles player, was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Player of the Year for 2006, her second consecutive Player of the Year award.
Nelson led the conference at No. 1 singles with a 7-1 record in GNAC matches at the No. 1 singles spot. Nelson was 11-1 overall in singles and 7-3 in doubles matches this season.
The junior from Newburyport, MA was also named Player of the Year for 2005 as a sophomore, with an 8-0 GNAC record in 2005.
Nelson led Suffolk to the GNAC semifinals after beating Johnson and Wales 8-1 in the quarterfinals. The Rams lost to eventual GNAC champion Simmons in the semifinals, 7-2.
Suffolk had four men’s soccer players named to the 2006 GNAC All-Conference team. Seniors Kevin Rogers and Babacar Ndour were selected to the GNAC first team and freshman Nick Celia was named Rookie of the Year. Junio Emilio Cassano was named to the all-conference second team.
Rogers (Monroe, CT) was named first team forward and Ndour (Dakar, Senegal) was named first team midfielder. Ndour led Suffolk in scoring with 23 points, nine goals and five assists. Rogers was second in scoring with 20 points, eight goals and four assists.
Celia (Hanson, MA) was named GNAC Rookie of the Year as a forward. He had 15 points on the season, six goals and three assists and started 11 of 16 games.
Cassano was selected to the second team as a midfielder. He had two goals and five assists this season.
Two Suffolk volleyball players were named to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference All-Conference third team. Senior setter Heather Cox (Feeding Hills, MA) and junior outside hitter Kristen Conrad (Hanover, MA) were named to the GNAC All-Conference third team for 2006. Cox averaged 6.5 assists per game and Conrad had 2.5 kills per game. The Rams finished the season with a 9-19 overall record.
