Hockey Loses On Final Minute Goal

Sophomore Joe Simeone’s (Cranston, R.I.) power play goal with eight seconds remaining lifted Johnson & Wales to a 2-1 ECAC Northeast ice hockey victory over Suffolk Thursday at Walter Brown Arena.

Simeone converted feeds from sophomore Andy Noyes (Littleton, Colo.) and freshman Jeremiah Ketts (Foristell, Mo.) on the game-winner for the visiting Wildcats (3-1, 3-0 ECAC Northeast), who took a 1-0 first period lead on a breakaway marker off the stick of junior Stephen Pfeiffer (Queens, N.Y.) that was set up by Noyes and junior Jimmy Van Asch (Coon Rapids, Minn.). Senior Kyle Cook (Chino Hills, Calif.) evened matters 7:55 into the final stanza for the host Rams (0-5, 0-3 ECAC Northeast) on assists from senior Mitch Sabo (Bell Canyon, Calif.) and sophomore Jeff Rose (Collinsville, Conn.), setting up Simeone’s late heroics.

Sophomore J.R. Woodland (Picton, Ont.) picked up the win in goal for Johnson & Wales with 34 saves on evening, while Rose made 30 stops in net for Suffolk as the Rams outshot the Wildcats by a 35-32 margin for the contest.

Suffolk hosts Franklin Pierce in an ECAC Northeast outing on Tuesday evening at Walter Brown Arena beginning at 7:15 p.m., while Johnson & Wales heads to Hooksett, N.H. on Saturday afternoon to square off with Southern New Hampshire in an ECAC Northeast match-up that faces off at 2:00 p.m.
