Suffolk University

1984 Baseball Team

The 1984 Suffolk baseball team made school history by being the first squad to qualify for Eastern College Athletic Conference postseason play with a record of 15– 9.

The Rams made a name for themselves on the local collegiate baseball scene under the leadership of head coach Joe Walsh and assistant coach Frank Niles.

The Suffolk nine produced convincing victories over many worthy opponents throughout the season, including Division II foes Bentley College, Bryant College, and Merrimack College (twice).

Backboned by top-notch starting pitchers in John Dalton and John Wood, the Rams won 10 of their last 14 games. Suffolk also produced a powerful offensive display, averaging nine runs per game and a torrid team batting average of .338.

The leading batter was Larry Chabre, a sophomore catcher and a Boston Globe All-Scholastic. Chabre batted a whopping .470, driving in 34 runs with six doubles, five triples and four home runs. Other heavy hitters and their respective batting averages included: John Lordan (.385), Mike Turilli (.380), Joe Clancy (.364), Mike Villani (.326), and Dan Duffy (.304).

The squad’s success can be attributed to a close-knit group of hard working and talented student-athletes who sacrificed their individual skills for the good of the team.
