As a College of Arts and Sciences student you can take advantage of the opportunity afforded by earning a minor in business.
A general business minor does more than supplement your major courses, it broadly exposes you to the environment in which you’ll be working. In Business Foundations, you will be introduced to the fundamental concepts and issues you will face in the working world. Following that, you will take three additional courses for a general business minor – courses that you pick from a broad list based on your interests and career aspirations. At the completion, you will be able to offer an employer a strong understanding of your primary discipline, as well working knowledge of the internal and external challenges faced by that company.
A related option for College of Arts and Sciences students is to select a business minor focused in one functional area after the introductory business course is completed. These provide a concentrated focus, which may give you an edge over other job applicants in your field.
The Public Service Minor is a great option for students in a wide variety of majors such as political science, psychology, environmental studies, theater, and others who expect to be managing and/or leading programs or organizations after their graduation. The minor is three courses: PAD 310 (formerly 321) plus two electives. We recommend that students take 310 first.
Will your job put you in a global business or market? Prepare yourself with a minor that exposes you to International Business. With 5 courses, you can explore globalization and businesses around the world.
The Marketing Minor is attractive to students majoring in Public Relations and Advertising. With 5 courses, a Marketing Minor will teach you the finer points of research and consumer behavior, crucial to any venture or professional pursuits.
An Information Systems Minor will add to your academics with functional and practical approach to organizational systems. With 6 courses, you will gain working knowledge of information technology, computer systems and the analytical skills applicable to any career and professional environment you’ll find yourself in.
A minor in Legal Studies isn’t just for pre-law students – it provides you with the ability to navigate regulations, laws, regulatory agencies, patent rules , intellectual property guidelines, or other legal issues you will encounter in your field. With 5 courses, this minor gives you the fundamental knowledge of business ethics and the latest legal issues.
If you might want to launch your own business down the road, then consider an Entrepreneurship Minor. Be forewarned, this minor attracts students who are passionate about founding a company and are also willing to put in the hard work necessary to make it happen. Minors are provided the same support from the Center for Entrepreneurial Studies if they decide to launch their business while still in school or as alumni.
Choose a Management Minor if you want to develop the working skills and knowledge needed for effective people management. This is handy not just for when you get promoted into a supervisory position, but for any position where you coordinate across departments, disciplines, or even countries. This minor is also a natural fit for Psychology and Sociology majors, as many of the courses build on principles from these disciplines.
