• Computer Lab Renovation

Summary

To expand and modernize the existing Sawyer Computer Lab’s space, atmosphere, and computers before the Fall 2008 semester. The renovation includes demolition of the current computer lab as well as part of the Office of Technology Management suite to make way for a larger, multifunctional Computing Center.

The new Computing Center will feature approximately 65 desktop workstations, a laptop area, and additional group workspaces.

Project Scope

Currently, the existing computer lab is home to 42 computers.

The scope of this project is to consolidate the capability of both rooms into one larger Computing Center, and to make the Computing Center more accommodating to laptop users and team collaboration.

While the Computing Center will be renovated and expanded, the computer hardware will be updated as well. We have selected small form factor computers to maximize desk space and to alleviate congestion.

The new laptop area is designed with commuter students in mind. Many students bring laptops with them to campus, and will now have dedicated space to set up and use them.

Recognizing that team work and collaboration is a critical piece of the Suffolk education, we are increasing the number of group workspaces. Each workspace will allow for multiple students to sit around a table, and use either the desktop workstation provided, or personal laptops.

Methodology

The project is divided into the following phases:

  • Planning
  • Design
  • Demolition
  • Construction
  • New Hardware Installation
  • Unveiling

Timeline

We are pleased to announce that the design phase has been completed, and physical construction began in June 2008.

The completion date of this project is very aggressive, and is expected sometime in August of this year.

The new Computing Center will be available for new and returning students, faculty, and staff in the Fall 2008 semester.
