Getting Started with Technology - Faculty & Staff

As a new faculty or staff member, you’ll want to begin using technology almost immediately to get your work done.

This page is designed to get you connected with the various technology resources at the university.

Steps to Getting Connected

Get Your Suffolk University ID

Your Suffolk University ID is a unique seven (7) digit number used by the university in place of your social security number. If you haven’t received it yet, contact the Registrar’s Office to request your Suffolk ID number.

You may obtain your Suffolk University ID from the University Police office located in the lobby of the Sawyer Building, 8 Ashburton Place.

Sign in to your Suffolk Email

Every member of the Suffolk University community is provided with a Suffolk email account. The university email system is used for university business. Faculty and staff receive a user ID and password upon hiring.

You can connect to your Suffolk email via the web at http://www.sumail.suffolk.edu/ or by using an email client, such as Thunderbird, to access your email.

Your Windows Computer User Account

To use any of the computer facilities (labs, classrooms, offices), you must obtain a Windows Computer User account. The purpose of this account is to gain access to your computer, its applications and the network.

You will receive this information from Human Resources upon hiring, or you may contact your department secretary if you have not received it.

Getting an Office Computer

OTM provides standardized, fully-configured Windows computers to every faculty and staff member upon hire. Users do not have a choice of model, operating system, or configuration.

We provide reasonably current hardware and standard software as part of the package.

Additional research or academic software is also available.

File and Storage Space

OTM provides secure file storage for faculty and staff through My Documents and shared department network drives.

Once you are given your Windows Computer User account, you will have access to My Documents (H Drive, your individual file space), a Department shared drive (a common drive for all members in your department) and the faculty research drive (Z drive, a common drive for all Business School faculty).

Save your class materials, research and presentations to these respective drives, where they’ll be safe, backed up and accessible to you on or off-campus.

Sign in to Campus Cruiser

Campus Cruiser is the current university portal. It provides access to campus and personal announcements, grading, and essential information about your courses and students.

In addition, it provides access to Blackboard, our course management system and convenient links to other university resources.

Your portal account consists of a username and password. If you have not received it, please contact your department secretary.

Accessing Blackboard

Blackboard is the university’s course management system that allows faculty to enhance their on-campus courses with online components. It provides a state-of-the-art teaching and learning environment that streamlines course management for faculty, offers capabilities to help improve student outcomes, and creates powerful efficiencies institution-wide.

It also powers our distance education programs, including our fully online MBA program.

You will be able to automatically sign in to Blackboard once you access Campus Cruiser. Courses that you are teaching will be automatically available to you every semester.

Software for Teaching and Research

Software provided for faculty and staff includes desktop applications, productivity suites and more.

To request additional software or software not listed, contact your department chairperson or the Dean to get approval. Once the approval is granted, OTM will take steps to provide you the necessary software.

Technology in the Classroom

Most of our classrooms are state-of-the-art and well-equipped with multimedia technology, offering the ideal technology-enhanced learning environment for both students and instructors.

Computing Facilities

In addition to your office computer and equipment, we offer general computing facilities in the Sawyer Building. The Sawyer Computing Center is located on the 5th floor and is currently designated for students, faculty, and staff.
