Robert Chatfield MSF ’95; Owner/Affiliate, Exit Strategy LLC

The MS in Finance Program strives to provide it’s students with a strong understanding of the fundamentals driving today’s finance industry supplemented with a series of practical applications which are immediately applicable in their professional lives.

The MS in Finance Program’s balance of fundamentals and practicality was exactly what appealed to Rob Chatfield.  Rob’s unorthodox background and common sense approach brought a different perspective into the classroom as a student, and he has continued to exhibit those traits throughout his professional career, choosing to work for a free market think tank while other classmates dove into financial services, before moving onto corporate finance positions and ultimately launching his own business providing mergers & acquisitions advisory services to privately held companies in New England.

The one touchstone throughout his career has been his appreciation for Suffolk University, and more specifically the MS in Finance Program, which ultimately drew him back to the University as an adjunct professor.  For over ten years Rob has taught in the program, usually a late evening class, where students appreciate his high energy and real world applications of dynamic financial theories.

What strikes students even more is his dedication to the Suffolk community.  You see, since the year 2000, Rob’s business and primary residence have been based in Maine.  So, for each three hour class he teaches, he makes a four-hour round trip commute.  More specifically, he takes the time out of his busy schedule to teach Investment Banking, a class that requires hours of additional preparation time, to provide timely insight and analysis that cannot be found in any textbook.  When asked why he does this, Rob’s response is simply, "Isn’t this what you’d expect from an alumnus of a University that provides its students with so much opportunity?  This is what makes a Suffolk alumnus more than just a graduate – you become part of a family."
