  • Anne Marie Conway

    Lecturer of Healthcare Administration

    Professor Conway co-teaches Innovation: The Future of Healthcare with Professor Gregg. She is a '00 alumnus of Suffolk’s Master of Health Administration Program and is a registered nurse and former executive at Shire Human Genetic Therapies.

    Shire Human Genetic Therapies is a biopharmaceutical company in Lexington, Massachusetts, that develops new treatments for rare genetic conditions. From 2001 until 2010, Anne Marie held several leadership roles at the company, most recently vice president of Development Operations.

    Anne Marie was involved with clinical program management, business operations, medical writing, and data management. She led integrated cross-functional teams, resulting in three biologic license application (BLA)/new drug application (NDA) filings and subsequent approvals, as well as supplemental new drug applications (sNDAs) that led to label changes.

    Prior to joining Shire Human Genetic Therapies, Anne Marie spent nearly 20 years at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, where she served as a staff nurse, outpatient nurse coordinator, and clinical trials manager. During her time there, she oversaw 15 Phase II-IV studies within the Division of Gastroenterology.

    Anne Marie has given presentations around the world on various topics, such as Gaucher disease, hepatitis C, clinical trials, and the legal and ethical aspects of informed consent. Her clinical background and administrative experience will offer valuable insight on the current and future challenges in the healthcare industry.

  • Shelagh Joyce

    Lecturer of Healthcare Administration

    Professor Joyce co-teaches Health Information Systems with Professor Rivard. She is a ’80 graduate of the Suffolk MBA program and has more than 30 years of experience as a healthcare administrator and executive.

    Shelagh is the chief information officer for the Medical Department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). She oversees the information systems (IS) and medical record (MR) initiatives. Over the years, she has significantly reduced costs by implementing electronic medical records (EMRs) and voice recognition technology. Under her leadership, MR salary expenses have dropped $300,000, and transcription expenses have been cut by 75 percent.

    Before joining MIT, Shelagh was employed at Beacon Partner Inc., a healthcare consulting company.

    As an engagement manager, she helped several major organizations, including Yale University School of Management, Tulane University, and Children’s Hospital in Ohio, evaluate, execute, and maintain new technology. Shelagh also served as the director of Community Practices Application at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where she oversaw the implementation of electronic records in physician offices and health centers. Earlier, as the director of Information and Telecommunication Systems/ Surgical Division, she managed all information and telecommunication systems for 30 physician offices.

    From 1981 until 1993, Shelagh was the director of Information Systems at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, Massachusetts. She managed a staff of 15 for technical and systems operations, programming, and systems analysis and managed a network of 600 devices over multiple hardware platforms. She has also been a guest lecturer for the undergraduate and graduate management programs at Simmons College and the University of Massachusetts, Boston.

    Shelagh is currently vice chair of the Board of Directors for Brant Point Courtyard and a member of the Massachusetts Health Data Consortium Board of Directors.

  • Althea C. Lyons

    Lecturer of Healthcare Administration

    The ability to successfully integrate human resources management directly into the pursuit of corporate strategic goals is the hallmark of Althea C. Lyons’s career. Now Vice President of Human Resources and Development at Northeast Hospital Corporation in Beverly, Mass., she directs human resources support for 2,700 employees and guides workforce development.

    Althea brings to this role deep insight into a complex industry that makes exceptional demands on HR professionals. It’s undergoing rapid change and is increasingly competitive. Administratively, it’s subject to federal and state regulations. Legal liability is a risk. It’s technology intensive, demanding highly specialized skills. Some workers are unionized. Workforce development is a high-stakes enterprise for the entire industry.

    Althea gained her expertise over the course of 25 years, rising from an entry-level HR position to the top of her field. Her expertise now spans all HR functions and includes recruitment and staffing; employee relations and conflict resolution; leadership development; employee compensation, health services, and workers compensation; negotiating, interpreting, and ensuring compliance with union contracts; designing, developing, and delivering training programs; project management; policy development, implementation, and compliance; designing, developing, and implementing reduction-in-force programs; managing volunteer services; and developing and overseeing budgets.

    At Northeast Hospital Corporation, which manages healthcare facilities north of Boston, Althea oversees design, development, and implementation of all employee-related programs, including compensation, benefits, employee/labor relations, training, and organizational development. She is the primary contact with the Massachusetts Nurses Association. Hospital committees she participates in address workplace violence, communications, recruitment and retention, and information management. She also oversees the management of the employee health program, volunteer services, the Child Development Center, and pastoral care. Another responsibility is designing, developing, and implementing programs to address clinical staffing shortages.

    Before joining Northeast, Althea was Human Resources Manager for Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates in Newton, Mass., supporting multiple locations and central clinical departments and ensuring consistency in the provision of human resources support. She trained staff to resolve issues related to employee relations, compensation, benefits, and recruitment. Working in union and non-union settings, she partnered with senior managers to develop HR training programs consistent with strategic business initiatives. Anticipating the potential for legal liability and ensuring compliance with federal and state laws was another responsibility.

    Althea serves on the advisory board of the North Shore Workforce Investment Board. She received her BA degree in Psychology and Spanish from Hartwick College and her MBA from Suffolk University.

  • Amy S. MacNulty

    Lecturer of Healthcare Administration

    Amy MacNulty teaches Health Systems I. She is President of MacNulty Consulting, L.L.C., a healthcare management consulting firm that provides strategy and planning services to healthcare organizations.

    With over 24 years of healthcare experience in strategic planning, physician strategies and community services planning, Amy is a recognized leader in facilitation and providing planning support for strengthening relationships between hospitals and physicians. Her client engagements range from strategic planning to strengthening physician-hospital relationships to clinical services business planning.

    Prior to starting MacNulty Consulting, LLC, Amy served as Senior Principal and Northeast Region Manager for Noblis, a nationally recognized science, technology, and strategy organization. She effectively combined her strategic planning, organizational development, and program design skills to manage a broad range of planning projects. Before working at Noblis, Amy was Managing Principal and Owner of The Bristol Group, Inc., with responsibility for implementing firm-wide marketing activities, expanding the client base and developing new service offerings.

    In 2006, Amy co-authored Strategies for Physician-Hospital Alignment: A National Study, sponsored by the American Hospital Association’s Society for Healthcare Strategy and Market Development (SHSMD). She has presented on this topic to a variety of national and regional associations, including the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), American College of Physician Executives (ACPE), Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA), Baptist Leadership Institute, Missouri Healthcare Executive Group (MHEG), and New England Society for Healthcare Strategy (NESHS).

    Amy was co-editor of Noblis’ Horizons: Journal of the Center for Health Innovation that was published for the past three years. She was awarded “Healthcare Strategist of the Year” in 2007 by NESHS.Amy earned a BA from The George Washington University and an MBA from Northeastern University.

  • Dwight McNeill

    Lecturer of Healthcare Administration

    Professor McNeill teaches Population Health and Health Policy. He has a PhD in Health and Social Policy as well as an MPH in Epidemiology and Public Health, and specializes in advanced analytics, performance measurement, systems and payment reform, community accountability, and people-centered healthcare.

    McNeill is president of WayPoint Health Analytics, a consulting practice that provides education, research, and guidance to on how organizations can use analytics to enhance business decision-making, engage patients, and improve the financing and delivery of healthcare. He is also a guest lecturer at Duke University Fuqua School of Business and Lead Faculty for the healthcare industry at the International Institute for Analytics.

    McNeill has extensive experience working in corporate settings, most recently as the global leader for business analytics and optimization for the healthcare industry for the IBM Corporation, and previously as director of healthcare information at GTE Corporation (Verizon).

    As the former assistant commissioner for Health Data and Analytics for the Division of Health Care Finance and Health Policy of the Department of Health and Human Services, McNeill helped bring an analytics focus to healthcare reform in Massachusetts. At the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality, McNeill helped translate research to action and promoted the importance of performance measurement and national priorities at the National Quality Forum.

    McNeill has published numerous articles in Health Affairs and other prestigious journals. He is currently working on a book, titled Transforming Healthcare through Analytics: What can be Learned from the Best Practices in Retail, Banking, Politics, Military, and Sports, which is scheduled for publication in early 2013.

  • Karen Nelson

    Lecturer of Healthcare Administration

    Suffolk alumnus Karen Nelson co-teaches Leadership and Ethics in the Health Organization with Professor Turner.

    Nelson began her career as a registered nurse after earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Saint Joseph College in West Hartford, Conn. While she enjoyed the clinical setting, Nelson wanted to leverage her skills in a new way to serve patients. She enrolled in Suffolk’s Master of Public Administration Program, with a focus in Health Policy so that she could pursue healthcare on a larger scale.

    Today, she serves as vice president of quality, compliance and regulatory affairs at Partners Continuing Care. Nelson leads a comprehensive portfolio of quality and compliance programs for four Spaulding Rehabilitation Network hospitals, 23 outpatient sites, two skilled nursing facilities, and Partners Healthcare at Home.

    Over the years, she has gained extensive experience in risk management, compliance, regulatory affairs, accreditation, and licensure at distinguished academic and community hospital settings. Before joining Partners, Nelson served as senior vice president of clinical affairs for the Massachusetts Hospital Association, where she provided strategic direction, leadership and project management for clinical issues, quality of healthcare, public health issues, professional practice, the healthcare workforce, and health information technology. She also led initiatives that supported Massachusetts hospitals in continually improving patient safety and quality of care.

    Earlier in her career, Nelson served as director of corporate and regulatory compliance, followed by executive director of clinical compliance and risk management at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

    She is a former board member of the Massachusetts Coalition for the Prevention of Medical Errors, the Massachusetts Center for Nursing, and the Organization of Nurse Leaders of Massachusetts and Rhode Island, and is active in the Organization of Nursing Leader (ONL) and several other professional organizations.

    In 2010, Nelson was appointed to the Advisory Committee to the Massachusetts Health Care Quality & Cost Council, and in 2011, she served as chairperson. Nelson continues to mentor Suffolk University students in the Healthcare Mentor Program of the Sawyer Business School.

  • Gerald F. O'Neill

    Lecturer of Healthcare Administration

    Gerald F. O’Neill has more than 30 years of experience as a senior financial manager for diverse healthcare organizations.

    He currently serves as the director of finance for Winchester Hospital in Massachusetts, where he oversees the general accounting, decisions support, and patient financial services departments. He has played a critical role in increasing the hospital’s revenue, helping the finance team secure an $80 million tax-exempt bond issuance to fund new construction and eliminate outstanding debt.

    O’Neill began his career as a financial analyst at Malden Hospital, while he was earning his MBA from Northeastern University. He was later promoted to controller, where he led 50 management, finance, and administrative personnel in financial planning, budgeting, internal auditing, patient accounting, and general accounting.

    In 1986, O’Neill went on to serve as treasurer for the North Suburban Health Systems Inc., which consists of the Malden Hospital, Glenridge Health Care Center, Malden Visiting Nurse Association, Healthcorp, and Sunrise Preschool Learning Center. During his time there, O’Neill led a $3 million operations improvement program with a major consulting firm.

    From 1997 to 1998, O’Neill served as the senior financial planning specialist for the Hallmark Health Corporation, where he played an integral role in the merger of Lawrence Memorial, Melrose-Wakefield, and Malden Hospital.

    Prior to joining Winchester Hospital in 2004, O’Neill served as the senior vice president, chief financial officer, and corporate compliance officer for Holy Family Hospital Inc. for six years. In addition to managing the financial operations of the hospital, he also oversaw the information systems, patient registration, medical records, and material management departments. He helped increase the net patient service revenue by $1.5 million and implemented a plan that reduced physician practice subsidies by $1.5 million.

    O’Neill is currently a member of the board of directors for the Massachusetts-Rhode Island Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) and Massachusetts Hospital Association Insurance Agency. He is also a fellow of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA), past President of the Massachusetts Chapter of HFMA, former Regional Executive for Region One HFMA, and former member of the Committee on Finance for the Massachusetts Hospital Association.

  • Elizabeth A. Turner

    Lecturer of Healthcare Administration

    Professor Turner teaches Legal Environment of Healthcare. She is a nurse-attorney whose practice focuses on health care law. She has over 30 years of healthcare experience in both clinical and administrative roles, including the areas of healthcare policy and regulation, quality assurance, and program design and evaluation. She has worked in the public and private healthcare sectors, including the Medicare and Medicaid programs, managed care organizations, private insurers, and state agencies. She has a particular interest in healthcare regulation, access to health care services, professional practice issues, including related employment matters, and patients’ rights.

    Elizabeth is respected for her expertise in the areas of healthcare practice, regulation, and licensure issues. She has worked with the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), and the various state licensing boards on professional practice and controlled substances matters. She represents individual practitioners, healthcare facilities, and programs and organizations. With a strong interest in public health and health policy issues, she has worked with agencies and practitioners providing healthcare services to the homeless, mentally ill, and indigent.

    Elizabeth is a member of the American Association of Nurse Attorneys and has served on the Board of Directors of the New England Chapter. She lectures extensively, both locally and nationally, on professional practice, regulatory compliance, and health policy issues, and she has authored several related articles and references. She is a founding partner of Snyder, Turner, Phillips & Ober, LLC, the first all nurse-attorney law firm in the country, located in the Boston area.

    Elizabeth holds an MPH from Boston University School of Public Health and a JD from Suffolk University Law School.
