• Description of Accommodations

Extended Testing Time

Extended time for exams constitutes “time and a half” based on a standard course time (i.e., a 50-minute course will allow a student with 75 minutes to complete an exam).
Instructors may provide this accommodation by allowing a student extended time directly before or immediately after a scheduled exam time, during office hours, or at any other mutually agreed upon time and location. To administer extended time exams through the Ballotti Learning Center, click here for more information.
The Dean of Students Office strongly discourages the allowance of “time intervals” while taking an exam (i.e., allowing a student to begin an exam, leave to attend another class, then return to complete the exam). Exams should be completed during the initial administration of the exam.

Separate Setting for Exams

Based upon the nature of the disability, a student may require a quiet and/or distraction free environment in which to take the exam.
Instructors may choose to administer exams through the Ballotti Learning Center based upon space availability. For more information about this option, please click here.

Extensions on Coursework

Based on the nature and severity of the disability, a student may require extensions on certain coursework throughout the semester, which can include assignments, papers, projects, or take home exams.
This accommodation is requested by the student on a per-project basis and is granted at the discretion of the instructor in the spirit of providing reasonable accommodations.

Use of a Computer/Word Processor for an Exam

When appropriate, a student will be permitted the use of a computer/word processor to take an exam or to complete an in-class assignment. In most cases, the student will be confined to the word processing function of the computer.
Under no circumstances is the student permitted to view files or connect to the Internet during the course of the exam.

Assistance from a Peer Note Taker

When appropriate, a student will qualify for assistance with note taking during class.
The student is responsible with making this request directly to the instructor.

The Dean of Students Office requests that the instructor identify and recruit a suitable student in the class to share their notes after class with the student making the request.

Books in Alternate Format

Students with a visual impairment, physical or learning disabilities may need to have an audio format of the text as an auxiliary aid to assist them in their reading and coursework.  Students seeking this supplemental aid must provide documentation that specifically supports this request.
Tape Recording Lectures

Under certain circumstances, a student will need to tape lectures for purposes of transcribing contents of tape to acquire notes from lecture.
A student is required to inform the instructor of this accommodation prior to recording.

Use of a Reader/Scribe for Exams

Based upon the nature of the disability, a student may require a reader and/or scribe to complete an exam.
This accommodation will always be used in conjunction with separate Setting for Exams and will be administered through either the Ballotti Learning Center or the Dean of Students Office.

Use of a Signer/Interpreter

Under rare circumstances, a signer or interpreter may accompany a student to class.

Preferential Seating Arrangements

Based upon the nature of the disability, a student may need to sit in a certain area of the classroom in order to provide an appropriate learning environment (i.e., a student with a hearing impairment may need a seat at the front of the classroom).
