  • Meet with the Coordinator of Disability Services to determine appropriate accommodations.

  • Register with the Dean of Students Office; and identify need for continued accommodations at the beginning of each semester.

Academic Accommodations

Academic accommodations are provided on an individual basis as needed. Examples of accommodations are extended-time testing, interpreters, assistance from peer notetakers, reader services and books on tape. For a complete list and description of academic accommodations, please click here .

Testing Accommodations

Measuring student progress in the classroom is an essential component of the educational process for all students. Some students with disabilities require that testing procedures be adapted to ensure the measurement of the student’s academic achievement, not the functional limitations caused by the student’s disability.

To create a fair testing situation, students may need some or all of the following accommodations:

  • Extended time on tests

  • Reduced distraction test environment

  • Accessible test site

  • Special equipment (ie, word processor)

  • Readers

  • Scribes

  • Alternative format: large print, Braille, etc.

Faculty Role with Testing Accommodations

It is important for the instructor and student to decide on the best way to provide testing accommodations. If the accommodation requires the exam to be administered in a place other than the classroom, effort should be made to provide an appropriate setting. Such a setting should be free from interruptions and distractions. A student should not be expected to cope with taking an exam in a busy office environment. The Ballotti Learning Center (BLC) supports Suffolk University students with disabilities by providing space (as available) and initial supervision for extended time exams. Only students who have a documented disability registered with the Dean of Students Office qualify to received the extended time accommodation through the Ballotti Learning Center. Due to staffing constraints, the BLC cannot proctor extended time exams; however, a staff member will observe that the student enters the testing area with only those materials specified on the Instruction Form (click here for procedure and form).
