The Mildred F. Sawyer Library occupies floors two, three, and four of 73 Tremont Street. It contains a collection of 120,000 volumes, more than 750 current periodicals, and more than 131,000 microform units. Books are arranged on open shelves by Library of Congress classification numbers and may be borrowed for 28 days, renewable. Periodicals are arranged by title on the first floor, but they may not be taken out of the library. Course required textbooks and assigned articles are kept on reserve at the Circulation Desk on the second floor. These may be borrowed for two hours in the library.
A combined catalog of the books and periodicals held in the Sawyer, Law, Madrid and Dakar Libraries is available at workstations throughout the library as well as by Internet from anywhere. The catalog also lists by course number, books and articles on reserve at the Circulation Desk, as well as books on order and the latest issues of periodicals received.
The Sawyer Library has seating for 442 students, with study carrels, tables, and twenty group-study rooms. The library also provides coin-operated photocopiers and microfilm readers/printers on the first floor. Laptop computers that access a wireless web network can be checked out of circulation for two hours of library use. The reference area includes a strong collection of specialized dictionaries, encyclopedias, directories, and handbooks. In addition, a wide variety of electronic databases (providing full-text articles, statistics, and directory information) is available through 16 reference workstations, and anywhere on- or off-campus via the web.
When additional resources are needed, the library can refer students to the appropriate library among the many in the Boston area. The holder of a current Suffolk University ID can check out materials from any of the 14 libraries in the Fenway Library Consortium. Students can also use the Boston Public Library, including its Kirstein Business Branch, the Massachusetts State Library, and other academic libraries nearby.
