Kids 2 College (K2C) is targeted to middle school students from populations that are traditionally underrepresented in higher education. The overarching goal of K2C is to make the students aware of coursework necessary for them to continue their education after high school and to dispel some of the myths students have about college life and the attainability of a college education.
Included in this program are lessons around college affordability, professional career paths and the education necessary for various careers. Also discussed are the differences in education options for students after they graduate from high school, with emphasis on the benefits of obtaining a bachelor’s degree, while reinforcing the belief that continuing your education after high school, at any level, is important.
Committed Suffolk students are needed to serve as mentors to implement the curriculum. The program takes place at the Eliot K-8 School in the North End and the group of Eliot students will be relatively small. The goal is to have as close to a 1:1 ratio of Suffolk students to Eliot students as possible. The program is scheduled to run once a week for seven weeks during the fall semester.
Mentors are selected based on an application [PDF] and interview process.
