Anna Deavere Smith Event - RSVP Required

09/21/2006 -

Anna Deavere Smith, best known as Nancy McNally, the National Security Advisor on NBC’s former hit show, The West Wing, will be performing on Thursday, September 21, 2006, when Suffolk University celebrates its 100th birthday. She is an accomplished actress, playwright, and author who has performed in film, on television and on stage.

Members of the Suffolk University Centennial Committee would like you to join us in welcoming Anna Deavere Smith and to hear her speak about her new book, Letters to a Young Artist: Straight-up Advice on Making a Life in the Arts – for Actors, Performers, Writers and Artists of Every Kind (Vintage Random House).

Ms. Smith will discuss her most recent book at 3:00 p.m. on The Boston Common, one of the main areas around campus where Suffolk will be conducting its various Centennial Celebration activities. The book addresses the full spectrum of issues that people starting out will face – from confidence, discipline and self-esteem to fame, failure and fear. In addition, the book touches upon other issues, such as presenting yourself effectively, building a diverse social and professional network, and using your art to promote social change.

An innovative performer, Ms. Smith has delivered a powerful, one-woman piece, entitled Twilight Los Angeles, to major audiences throughout the country, including Broadway. Twilight Los Angeles, which focuses on the 1991 Rodney King beating and the aftermath of the 1992 verdict, has received two Tony nominations, an Obie, a Drama Desk Award, a Special Citation from the New York Drama Critics, and numerous other honors.
