Biography

Professor Abbie Katz holds a BA with honors from the University of Chicago, where she studied English. As a Production Stage Manager, she worked for 12 years at the American Repertory Theatre, managing over 60 productions, and touring internationally with the company. Beginning in 1994 she stage managed independently, touring with artists such as Robert Wilson, Meredith Monk, Lucinda Childs and the Martha Graham Dance Company throughout the US, Europe, and Asia. As an administrator, Ms. Katz managed all production aspects for Anna Deveare Smith’s Institute on the Arts and Civic Dialogue at Harvard University in 1999 and in 2000 was Associate Producer for the New Haven's International Festival of Arts and Ideas, initiating their expansion to the cities of Stamford and New London, CT. In 2001 Ms. Katz became General Manager of The Market Theater (named "Best Theatre in Boston" by the Boston Globe in 2001).

She managed the start-up of the Durrell Theatre at the Cambridge YMCA, and managed planning for the Constellation Center performing arts venue in Kendall Square. From 2007 to 2009 she was Executive Director of Green Street Studios, the Cambridge dance and performance venue. She has been the Associate Producer of the Boston Early Music Festival since 2002, producing the biannual Festival's centerpiece opera in two venues in Massachusetts. In 2005 Ms. Katz taught Production Management at Emerson College. Ms. Katz began teaching at Suffolk University in 2002 and now advises on Theatre Department Productions in addition to teaching Stage Management and Arts Administration.
