Neuropsychology, cognitive-behavioral therapy, substance abuse.
As a scientist-practitioner, I have worked as a neuropsychologist, psychotherapist, and administrator in a variety of clinical settings, working with a broad range of populations, especially individuals with traumatic brain injury, addictions, and specific learning disabilities. In addition to assessment and forensic (civil litigation) aspects of neuropsychology, I have always been interested in treatment and rehabilitation. My current research is focused on exploring contrast sensitivity mechanisms underlying slow reading in non-dyslexics and individuals with Parkinson’s Disease, and is based on a dopamine deficit hypothesis. A related focus is on the role that sleep, fatigue, arousal, and attention play in regulating cognitive (and especially executive) functions, both during development and as part of various disorders. Finally, I am interested in substance abuse and addiction, and the role of dopamine in addicted individuals.
