• Useful Web Sites for Students of History

The History Department has compiled a list of free web sites that should be of interest and use to students of history.  It emphasizes, in particular, collections of primary materials.  Great resources exist on the internet for students undertaking to do historical research projects.  These sites offer access to personal narratives, collections of documents, statistical compilations, images, etc.  The range of topics is enormous.  The list has been organized into nine different sections.  If you don’t find what you are looking for under a specific geographic section, try one of the more general headings.  The list is arranged as follows:

General & Global

This includes general sites on topics ranging across national boundaries, also maps, guides to history on the web, etc.

Statistical Data

Census materials, economic and other data, information about the current value of old money are some of the materials accessible here.

U.S. Government Sources

This section will direct you to materials at the Library of Congress and the National Archives, also to historical information about U.S. foreign relations and the three branches of the federal government.

U.S. /Topical

Numerous topics on American history are represented by the web sites listed here.  Included are sites on advertising, popular culture, slavery, American women’s history, labor history, famous trials, U.S. foreign policy, etc.

World/General

This includes sites useful generally for studying the history of the world.

Americas (outside the U.S.)

Materials relevant to the history of Latin America and Canada are listed here.

Materials on East Asia, the Middle East, India, etc. can be found listed here.

Africa

Europe (including Russia)

Many of the sites listed here deal with different periods of European and Russian history.

It is our hope to regularly update this list.  Suggestions are welcome.
