For employees who drive to work, Suffolk University provides those who carpool with at least two others the option to park on site without charge in a designated carpool space.
To be eligible for carpool space, you must come to campus at least four days per week and must ride or drive to work with at least two other people (who may or may not be Suffolk employees). Spaces are limited and assigned on a first come, first served basis. If the number of groups interested in carpooling exceeds the number of spaces available, then spaces will be offered on a monthly rotation.
Each individual participating in carpooling must complete a Carpool Affidavit. Non-Suffolk employees must have a Non-Suffolk Employee Affidavit completed by their employers. All affidavits must be completed and returned to the Human Resources Office.
Taxes and Fees
The University has designated carpool spaces in the garage at the Stahl Center (73 Tremont Street). The normal monthly fee is $350 but are free to those in an approved carpool. Suffolk employees who carpool are responsible for the taxes on the benefit. You will be taxed on the fee minus any IRS tax exclusion ($255 for 2016) will be assessed in your regular pay. If multiple Suffolk employees carpool in one group, the taxes are split among those employees and each person receives the IRS tax exclusion.
The University has partnered with MassRIDES, the statewide travel options organization, to provide free carpool-matching services. MassRIDES makes it easy to find a carpool that fits your needs. Through the University’s membership in MassRIDES, you may find others living near your home who are interested in forming a car pool. MassRIDES will provide you with a list of commuters with similar commutes as yours. For more information on the car pool and van pool matching system, please visit MassRIDES.
