All spills of unknown materials should be treated as a hazardous chemical spill.

  • Call the Suffolk University Police at 617-573-8111 or 8333. University Police will be responsible for contacting the Boston Fire Department.
  • Contact the Office of Environmental Health and Safety at 617-573-8628.
  • Remove any affected personnel from the area.
  • Attend to injured personnel.
  • Contain the spill and alert others in the immediate area.
  • NOTICE: Do not attempt to clean up a mercury spill. Call the Office of Environmental Health and Safety and then contact the SUPD.

Chemical Spill on the Body

  • Remove all contaminated clothing.
  • Flood exposed area with running water from faucet or safety shower for at least 15 minutes.
  • Obtain medical attention by calling the Suffolk University Police at 617-573-8111 or 8333.
  • Report incident to supervisor, laboratory instructor, and to the Office of Environmental Health and Safety at 617-573-8628.

Chemical Splashed in the Eye

  • Immediately rinse eyeball and the inner surface of the eyelid with water continuously for 15 minutes. Forcibly hold eye open to ensure effective wash behind eyelids
  • Obtain medical attention by calling the Suffolk University Police at 617-573-8111 or 8333
  • Report incident to supervisor, laboratory instructor, and to the Office of Environmental Health and Safety at 617-573-8628
