A Legacy of Generosity
Suffolk has its origins in a simple act of goodwill that took place more than a century ago. George Frost, a Boston businessman and philanthropist, offered a loan to pay the college tuition of our founder, Gleason Archer. When Archer later tried to pay back the debt, Frost refused, saying, “If you ever have the chance to pass this favor along to others, do it for me.”
Archer made good on the debt by founding Suffolk Law School. And more than 100 years later, our 23,000 alumni are using the knowledge and inspiration they gained here to change the world, change lives—and change the rules. At Suffolk, we understand the immense benefits of “paying it forward.” Grateful for what we have been given, we give back.

Thomas J. Ryan JD'74 received a Dean's Scholarship in his second year. “That financial assistance enabled me to finish law school,” said Ryan, who is the retired senior vice president and general counsel of PepsiCo Beverages and Foods. “We know our family has been successful and wonderfully blessed, in part because someone before me supported a scholarship fund.”
