Practicing real-world legal skills in a Moot Court or Practice competition or writing journal articles about cutting edge areas of the law is a great way to learn more about being an IP lawyer and the issues clients face. Participating in competitions and the Journal of High Technology involves the diverse community of lawyers and innovative organizations outside of Suffolk Law, enriching students’ professional relationships with the IP community while still in law school.

Competitions

For students interested in IP and business transactions, Suffolk Law fields at least one team for the IP Law Meet competition, which takes place in the fall semester. The IP Law Meet is a competition based on the drafting and negotiation of a mock IP transaction.  Teams compete on the basis of term sheets they draft in response to the proposed transaction, client interviews and a final negotiation which takes place in early November, hosted by a regional law school. In 2013, Suffolk Law hosted the competition welcoming over 50 students and advisors to campus.

For students interested in Trademark Law, Suffolk Law sends a team annually to the Saul Lefkowitz Moot Court Competition. The competition typically draws 80 teams of law students who brief and argue an issue of trademark and unfair competition law in an appellate litigation setting. The competition takes place every February in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.

For students interested in Patent Law, Suffolk Law participates in the Giles Rich Memorial Moot Court Competition. Suffolk Law submits one team of students and hosts one of the four regional competitions. The finals are in Washington, D.C.

Law Journal

The Journal of High Technology Law focuses on every area of law affected by high technology, from IP to Trade Secrets and E-Commerce to Cybercrime. The student-run honor board is selected through the summer write-on competition. Membership is open to all students who qualify, not just those who concentrate in IP. A unique feature of this journal is that all articles publish online.
