Special Topics: Globalization of Media & Telecommunications CJN 491 - 4 credits

This course will explore the development of global media and telecommunication corporations and the influence these transnational organizations bear on nation-state communication policy, global and local culture, and the world economy. In particular, class content will focus on the European context, including the negotiation of an EU telecommunications policy between member states, international trade agreements with the United States, issues of sovereignty and cultural preservation, and debates about cultural imperialism highlighted by anti-globalization movements.

This course examines advertising, P.R. and the Internet from a European perspective. What are the current best practices employed in marketing communication in Europe? How is communication adapting to changes in culture, design, and technology? The class will focus on Spain and the European Community.
