The Museum of African-American History will celebrate the life and achievements of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., with a Jan. 15 event featuring the musical talents of young people from the Greater Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra’s Intensive Community Program.
The program will be presented as part of the Suffolk University Centennial Partnership Series.
The musicians will perform orchestral renditions of gospel, spirituals, classical music. There also will be readings from the speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Participants will include:
• Mariama White-Hammond, executive director of Project Hip Hop (Highways Into the Past- History, Organizing & Power). The youth-led organization uses hip hop to engage young people and develop their skills as activists and organizers in their schools, communities and the broader society.
• Suffolk student Aaron Pitre, who sang the University’s new alma mater at the Centennial kickoff event on the Boston Common in September.
The African Meeting House, part of the Museum of African American History, is celebrating its 200th anniversary, while its Beacon Hill neighbor Suffolk University marks its Centennial year.
