Certificate in Electronic Graphic Design: Employment Opportunities

Design Studios

These independent businesses specialize in such areas as industrial design, corporate design and architectural graphics.

Publishing

There are several major book publishers in the Boston area that have substantial art departments requiring the diversified talents of graphic designers and illustrators.  The in-house designer controls the visual appearance of a book at all stages, from manuscript through the final printing.

Computer Graphics

Video production houses create sophisticated computer images for use in advertising and promotional work.  Architecture and engineering firms employ computer artists to produce three-dimensional models. Presentation graphics has become an important aspect of corporate work.  Desktop publishing software allows the print designer to create page layouts on the computer, increasing both speed and flexibility.

Multimedia and Web Design

This is a growing and important market for all graphic designers.  Knowledge and expertise in multimedia is in high demand as conventional print design is co-designed with on-line and digital publishing.  Multimedia authoring is used to create dynamic, moving graphics and animation as well as Internet web pages.

Newspapers and Magazines

Most newspapers and magazines have art departments which are responsible for creating an effective and creative printed product.  Designers with a strong background in typography, graphic reproduction and illustration techniques are especially needed in this field.

Television

Television stations employ artists and designers to develop titles and news graphics for live television, film production and promotions.  Computer graphics expertise is necessary because of the immediate time frame of much news gathering work.  Television stations also create a great deal of advertising and printed material for which designers are also needed.

Industry

Many corporations have their own in-house design departments giving them closer control, both artistic and financial, over publications such as annual reports, sales presentations, newsletters, company advertising and packaging.

Printing

Large printing firms frequently supply their clients with designer-related services, ranging from layout to the total supervision of large projects from concept to the final printed piece.

Freelance

Many designers and illustrators work as freelance artists.  They supply their services to agencies or individuals on a project-by-project basis. Freelance designers and illustrators work for a variety of different clients and tend to specialize in particular aspects of design.

Illustration

Freelance opportunities exist to illustrate web pages, magazines, books, newspapers and other printed pieces.

Package Design

Some designers specialize in creating packaging for products and manuals. Package design protects, dispenses, stores and announces the identity of the product.
