 Name:  Catherine Headen
 Candidate:  Graphic Design Master’s Program
Education:  BA in Art History, Tufts University, 2003

Catherine applied to The New England School of Art and Design to define her own vision. “There’s so much flexibility in what you can do,” she says. “Instead of saying, ‘This is what you have to do,’ my professors ask, ‘Where would you like to go with your work?”...

Catherine relishes the opportunity to flex her creative muscles after working in supply chain management. “I thought [The School of Art & Design] would be the best place for me because I knew it was a new, flexible program,” she says. Catherine took a year of foundational courses to brush up on her studio skills before joining her fellow graduate students in the classroom.

“Everybody brings something different to the table,” she says of her classmates, who have backgrounds in English, anthropology, and many types of illustration. “They have a wide range of interests and experience levels, and the professors have been warm and welcoming.”

As she sharpens her cutting-edge design skills, Catherine is also gaining a whole new perspective on art history at The School of Art & Design. She spent six weeks last summer analyzing masterpieces and creating her own artwork in Florence and Venice. “I’m really taking advantage of my time here,” she says, reflecting on her Italian summer and looking ahead to her final classes. “There are a lot of incredible things going on in the program.”
