Illustration
with Wallace Marosek, Associate Professor of Graphic Design

This course introduces the skills necessary for meeting clients’ illustration needs in a variety of media appropriate to context. Florence, Italy and it’s environs will serve as the subject matter and catalyst in developing the ability to draw objects, i.e. architecture, people, and landscape while advancing a personal style. Study will begin with a pre-departure journal/book binding workshop at Suffolk University and then outdoors in and around Florence, Italy, Tuscan Hill towns and the Veneto exploring basic illustration styles, methods and techniques. The resulting paintings and pen and ink drawings combined with various book-binding processes, will result in the creation of a sketchbook/watercolor journal. Time will be spent primarily on site throughout Florence and the surrounding countryside of Tuscany completing visual research, drawing, watercoloring en-plein-aire and enhancing illustration skills. Emphasis will be placed on designing the proper environment for presentation of the final illustrations which will culminate in a gallery exhibition at NESADSU. The course will include visits to Florence’s world-renowned art museums, churches, sculpture gardens, galleries, and local hill towns as well as a weekend in Rome and a week in Venice. Weekly critiques will occur at various locations when appropriate.
