Changes to the SSHIP benefits
Based on feedback from students and the health services staff, we are very excited to announce that enhancements have been made to the Suffolk Student Health Insurance Plan (SSHIP) for the 2008-2009 academic year. These increased benefits are being provided without raising the cost and are available for ALL students. This is particularly important to know if you are or intend to enroll in this plan. The benefit increases are as follows:
- An increase in the prescription medication annual limit from $750 to $1,200.
- An increase in the plan maximum from $50,000 to $100,000.
- Elimination of the outpatient maximum. An increase in the medical evacuation limit from $10,000 to $40,000.
- An increase in repatriation of remains from $7,500 to $20,000.
- Elimination of a different premium rate for J-1 visa students as the basic plan now meets the requirement for J-1 visa holders.
Other changes to the SSHIP for 2008-2009 include:
- Different start and end dates for coverage. This was done to reflect the fact that the Law School calendar starts and ends earlier than the other colleges.
- Students who are currently enrolled in the 2007-2008 SSHIP will have their coverage extended until the new start date of August 21, 2008.
- New students beginning in the Spring 2009 semester will have health coverage starting January 1, 2009.
- International students will be required to purchase the SSHIP. In the past some international students have purchased other plans. After studying these plans it became apparent that they did not meet the requirements of the state law. With the enhancements stated above, the SSHIP will provide good coverage at a reasonable price. (International students with a parent or spouse employed by a U.S. company who are covered under a U.S. health insurance plan through that company may be eligible to waive the Suffolk insurance.)
- International students currently covered by another plan should not renew the policy for 2008-2009 and should inform third parties (embassies or other sponsoring organizations) who may have purchased other insurance for them in the past or for the 2007-2008 academic year.
