00:05 Hi, everybody, my name is Jamie Bondar. 00:07 I'm the Director of Tutoring and Peer-to-peer Success Services here in the Center for Learning and Academic Success. 00:13 The Center for Learning and Academic Success is one of the offices in the Division of Student Success. 00:17 The division also houses the Center for International Programs and Services, 00:21 as well as the Office of Disability Services and the Undergraduate Academic Advising Center. 00:27 And we are a one-stop-shop and we have one central reception area located on the ninth floor of 73 Tremont, 00:34 just outside the elevators where we have a front staff that can get you connected 00:38 to the services of any of the offices within the Division of Student Success. 00:43 I want to take a moment and talk a little bit about the services that are offered in the Center for Learning and Academic Success. 00:51 What you see on this image is a little bit of an overview on the tutoring side of the Center for Learning and Academic Success. 00:58 We offer tutoring for over 400 courses each semester. 01:03 Last academic year, we offered tutoring for over 500 courses across both semesters. 01:07 And we also offer math stats and accounting drop-in tutoring. 01:12 We also offer writing tutoring for any project, for any course, at any stage of the writing process, 01:19 whether that's in the brainstorming phase or all the way at the end of getting some feedback on a completed draft. 01:25 We also offer art and design tutoring, as well as a variety of academic skills workshops and study groups. 01:32 We also offer weekly English language workshops, 01:34 as well as English language tutoring for our emerging multilingual students who would like to work on deepening their proficiency in English. 01:44 You can have your tutoring appointment either in-person or online this semester, 01:48 and so in-person appointments are offered from 9:30 to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9:30 to 4 on Fridays. 01:56 And then tutoring is actually offered until 11 p.m. if you want a remote tutoring 02:02 appointment, with remote appointments exclusively being available between 7 and 11. 02:07 But even during the daytime, when we have in-person tutoring, you can also opt to have an online appointment at that time as well. 02:15 On the coaching side of the CLAS, our academic coaches, 02:18 our professional staff members who meet with students to really work on college success skills, 02:23 things like setting goals, managing their time, study strategies, really just helping each student come up with a personalized success plan. 02:32 And so I wanted to take a moment and show you how you can make an appointment with any of the offices within the Division of Student Success. 02:41 The one exception would be coaching. 02:42 If you want to make a coaching appointment, go ahead and just email the email address that you see on this on this image here. 02:47 clas@suffolk.edu, and we will get you connected to an academic coach for the other offices within the Division of Student Success. 02:56 You can either call us at the phone number that you saw, stop by the front desk of 73 Tremont on the ninth floor, 03:04 or you can schedule using your Navigate account. And I'm going to show you how to do that now. 03:13 So when you log into your Navigate accounts, and you can see in my location bar 03:20 suffolk.campus.eab.com is the URL that you want to go to. 03:24 You can also just search for Navigate on the Suffolk website, and then you'll be able to get connected to the navigate platform, that one as well. 03:31 But on the home page of your Navigate account, you just want to click schedule an appointment in the top right-hand corner. 03:39 Then once the page load, 03:41 you're going to see a series of menus that you can choose from, and you can choose what type of service you would like to get connected to. 03:49 So. What type of appointment would you like to schedule? 03:53 Well, I could choose advising services, and that's how I would get connected to appointments with the undergraduate academic advising center, 04:01 as well as appointments in the Center for International Programs and Services. 04:05 For the sake of this illustration, I'm just going to pick up tutoring services and then now it's, 04:11 well, what type of tutoring services are you looking for? So you can see we have our course-based tutoring both from Boston and Madrid campus. 04:18 We do often offer the same services for students in Madrid. 04:21 You can see English language tutoring in Boston or Madrid, and we can also have writing tutoring in Boston or Madrid. 04:26 So for the sake of this demonstration, I'm just going to pick a 30-minute writing tutoring appointment on the Boston campus. 04:32 And let's say it'll be for this coming Monday. 04:40 So now that I selected the service that I'm looking for, 04:43 I have selected the date that I'm looking for, now Navigate's showing me all the appointment times that are available. 04:49 If I really am looking for a specific time, I can just pick the time and go that way. 04:53 However, if I want to work with a particular tutor, I have the option of choosing my tutor from the staff menu on the left. 05:03 Then I have the option of how would I like to meet? Do I want an in-person or a virtual appointment? 05:07 Remember, both are available. So I'm just going to say let's just do in-person. 05:13 OK, so now that narrows down to just the in-person appointments that are available, and what office? 05:19 Well, I want to work with the CLAS - that's where we're all tutoring is offered. 05:24 And for writing tutoring, I don't need to choose, of course, because writing tutoring is offered for any course, any project. 05:30 If I were choosing course-based tutoring, this is where I would choose the course that I would like to work on. 05:37 And so let's say 4:00 is the best time for me. 05:42 And so now I've told Navigate the day that I'm interested in, the time that I'm interested and the service that I'm interested in. 05:49 And now the system has has matched me with a tutor who's available at that time. 05:54 So now I have a confirmation screen telling me that my writing tutor is going to be Thomas Filbin. 06:00 And we can see if we can confirm all the information here that we are going to meet in person. 06:05 And then any time you schedule your own appointment on Navigate, we ask that you include your cell phone number in the comments field. 06:12 And that's just because if for any reason we need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, 06:17 we can call you and more quickly reschedule your appointment. 06:22 We also asked in the comments box you include anything about any of the details about what you would like to work in this appointment. 06:29 So tell us what writing project you're working on. 06:32 Tell us what stage of the writing process you're in, what you'd like to focus on in that appointment. 06:36 And that will be a great help for your tutor as your tutor prepares for your appointment. 06:41 And then once you have selected everything as you wish, of course, if you want text reminders, 06:49 you also want to insert your cell phone number in that field at the bottom. 06:52 And that will be the phone number that Navigate sends your text message reminders to. 06:59 And so then you would just click schedule to confirm the appointment. 07:03 Of course, I'm not going to do that now because this is just for the sake of demonstration. 07:07 So that's how you would go about scheduling your appointments, and the menus would look a little bit different if 07:12 you were scheduling undergraduate academic advising or with the Center for International Programs and Services. 07:18 But it all starts on the home page of your Navigate account by clicking that schedule an appointment button. 07:23 A few things that just want to mention about tutoring in closing: 07:28 number one, all of our services are free, and that actually is true of the services of the other offices in the Division of Student Success, 07:36 so there's no additional fee involved here. You've already paid for this in your tuition. 07:40 So we never want money to be an obstacle between you and getting the academic support that you need. 07:47 We always recommend that students come early and often. 07:51 I always like to tell people we work much better as a fitness center than an emergency room. 07:55 And, you know, while we do sometimes have those emergency room type appointments where a student will come in and is looking for tutoring, 08:03 you know, to get help in preparing for an exam that's in an hour. 08:08 And if we have a tutor available, we'll certainly, you know, let them make that appointment. 08:13 But, you know, we need to be realistic. There's only so much we can do to help you prepare for an exam that's in an hour. 08:18 So our tutors will generally say, okay, let's let's do the best we can for this exam 08:23 that's coming up really soon, 08:24 but how about we schedule another appointment for next week and the week after and the week after to prepare for that next appointment 08:30 that's for that next exam that's in a month? And then finally, our services are for all students. 08:38 We are not a remedial service. You don't have to wait until you think you're going to fail a course, to come access tutoring. 08:45 While we certainly do have students who are coming in to utilize tutoring and academic coaching, trying not to fail courses, 08:53 we have lots and lots of students who are trying to turn A minuses into A's and everywhere in between. 08:59 So I hope you come visit us on the ninth floor of 73 Tremont and I look forward to seeing you all this semester.
