There’s no question—BSBA senior Thiago DeSouza is career-driven. At age 21, he’s the director of marketing for a local startup company called homeyou. He leads a team of about seven people, many of whom are much older than him, all while juggling a full-time class schedule at Suffolk.
Driven to Succeed
Since he was a teenager, Thiago’s been taking advantage of every opportunity that comes his way. During high school, he took extra courses at a nearby college. And this May, he’ll graduate from Suffolk a year early with a double major in Information Systems and Finance.
But his academic achievements are just part of the story. Thiago’s also been focused on building his resume. “My dad always says, ‘the secret to getting a good job is 30 percent theory and 70 percent experience.’ That’s what pushed me to get as much work experience as possible,” he said.
Finding Opportunities to Build a Resume
Throughout high school, Thiago worked at various contracting companies as a sales representative and manager. During his second year at Suffolk, he was the general manager for OTC Contracting Corporation, where he oversaw 11-12 construction jobs valued at $1.1 million, implemented digital contracting processes, and built the company website.
This past summer, Thiago completed an internship at One Alliance Insurance Corporation in Puerto Rico. Working as an operations analyst, he drew from his information systems and finance background. “One of my classmates had connections at the company and helped me get the position. I had never been to Puerto Rico before, but I’m so glad I went. It was a once-in-a-lifetime learning experience,” Thiago said.
Leveraging Experience to Advance Career
This past year, Thiago has been working at homeyou—a company that connects local contractors with homeowners who are planning remodeling projects. He was initially hired as a product manager and charged with coming up with ideas for new applications and products. In this role, Thiago helped redesign the homeowner dashboard. In January, he was promoted to director of marketing, where he helps plan and execute the company’s marketing strategy to drive website traffic and generate leads.
As the youngest person in homeyou’s marketing department, Thiago has found a mentor in Artem Filikov, one of the company’s co-founders. Thiago also frequently consults with Suffolk marketing faculty members to brainstorm ideas and discuss the latest trends in digital media.
Suffolk has been instrumental in helping Thiago launch his career. “My information systems classes have helped with many aspects of my job, such as coding, search engine marketing, and web development. And my finance courses have been crucial to understanding the numbers side of things. Whether it’s determining our return on investment or understanding our risk/return tradeoff, Suffolk has given me the tools to succeed,” said Thiago, who plans to continue working at homeyou after graduation.
