Money can be a game-breaker for students seeking to deepen their education with internships. The Rappaport Center for Law and Public Service administers several subsidized, non-credit fellowship programs:

Consumer Law Public Service Fellowships: Awarded throughout the year on a rolling basis, the fellowship pays up to $7,000 ($15 an hour). Placements have included Boston’s Fair Housing Commission and the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Public Protection and Advocacy Bureau.

Donoghue Barrett & Singal, P.C. Health Law Fellowship: A full-time, public health law internship, awarded to one student each summer. It includes a $7,000 stipend. Fellowships have included the Boston Public Health Commission and Health Law Advocates.

Thomas J. Drinan Memorial Fellowship: A summer internship in criminal justice. Placements have included the attorney general’s office and the Committee for Public Counsel Services.

Paul R. McLaughlin Memorial Fellowship: Awarded each summer to one student who is interested in a career in criminal law in the public sector. Students have worked in the offices of the state attorney general and of district attorneys.

Rappaport Fellows Program in Law and Public Policy: A dozen fellows – two from each of Boston-area law schools –spend the summer working with public policymakers.

Suffolk Public Interest Law Group Fellowships: The Suffolk Public Interest Law Group (SPLIG), administered by the Rappaport Center, awards subsidies to students working unpaid summer internships in government or non-profit positions. About 60 students are helped each summer. Internships have ranged from the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General’s Corps to the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center.

SPILG International Fellowships: With funding raised jointly by Suffolk’s Rappaport and the International Law Society, provides $5,000 grants to students interning internationally with non-profit organizations or government agencies.

John E. Fenton, Jr. Public Service Awards: are awarded to immediate Suffolk Law graduates. The awards are contingent on the student working for an approved public service employer after passing the bar.
