Suffolk University Law School professors are ready to comment on today’s U.S. Supreme Court decisions on same-sex-marriage cases.

The Supreme Court is issuing rulings on Hollingsworth v. Perry, which challenges California’s denial of same-sex marriage rights through Proposition 8, and U.S. v. Windsor, challenging a section of the Defense of Marriage Act.

• Professor Robert H. Smith, who will discuss constitutional issues raised in these cases. Smith, the former dean of the Law School, teaches Constitutional Law, Mediation, Supreme Court Seminar and Clinical Teaching. Among Smith’s professional affiliations is the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.
• Professor Renée Landers, author of “A Marriage of Principles: The Relevance of Federal Precedent and International Sources of Law in Analyzing Claims for a Right to Same-Sex Marriage,” in the New England Law Review, and the book chapter “What's Loving Got to Do With It? Law Shaping Experience and Experience Shaping Law,” in the 2012 book Loving Vs. Virginia in a Post-Racial World: Rethinking Race, Sex, And Marriage.
• The Hon. John M. Greaney, a retired justice of the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts whose concurring opinion in the case that legalized same-sex marriage in the commonwealth said, in part: “Simple principles of decency dictate that we extend to the plaintiffs, and to their new status, full acceptance, tolerance, and respect. We should do so because it is the right thing to do.” Greaney also wrote the opinion in a case allowing same-sex couples to adopt children in Massachusetts., Greaney is director of the Macaronis Institute for Trial and Appellate Advocacy at Suffolk University Law School.
