Kelly Stone, SULS '12, says South Africa today is a dangerous and oppressive place for women and is not worthy of the vision imagined by President Nelson Mandela when he was released from prison 23 years ago. Stone, who is a pro-bono attorney at the Women’s Legal Centre in Cape Town, wrote this short essay in Oxford Human Rights Hub about her hope that the gravely ill South African leader can inspire the nation to do better.
