Carmen N. Veloria, assistant professor of Education and Human Services, was honored with the Creating the Dream Award at the annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Luncheon.

Veloria has worked tirelessly for over a decade to make Suffolk a welcoming place for the AHANA community, and she inspires University students to work for a more just society through her example and teaching.

Her work with GEAR UP and Coach has inspired Suffolk students to embrace diversity as they support the education of underrepresented students in the Boston Public Schools.

This work also has provided an opportunity for high school students of color to achieve their dreams of a college education.

Veloria also has worked as a mentor for the McNair Scholars program, helping talented Suffolk students of color prepare for rigorous graduate work.
