Anthony Gemma, BS '92 -- Lincoln businessman Anthony P. Gemma confirmed Thursday afternoon that he is "strongly considering running" for the Congressional seat to be vacated by Patrick J. Kennedy.

"I'm in the process of talking to family, friends, and close colleagues," he said in a brief interview at the State House Thursday afternoon, where he was attending an unrelated event.

Gemma, the former president of Gem Plumbing and Heating, has never before run for political office.

"I'm an outsider," he said. "This is really for the people of Rhode Island; it's not for me -- If I do it."

Gemma described himself as a "conservative Democrat" and someone willing to dip into his personal bank account if necessary.

"We'll dip into our pocket enough to be a viable candidate," he said.

Gemma, 40, currently serves as the president of both the non-profit Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Foundation and Mediapeel media solutions, a Lincoln-based marketing company.

A La Salle Academy graduate, he earned an undergraduate degree from Suffolk University and a law degree from the Roger Williams School of Law. He said that he's also a real-estate broker. Providence Journal, April 29, 2010
