Professor Lydia Martin will show paintings from her Loteria Series in the solo exhibition Lydia Martin: Lotería II June 24 to July 25 at the James Abbott McNeill Whistler House Museum of Art in Lowell. A reception with the artist will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 27.
Martin has created a series of oil paintings inspired by and organized around the traditional images associated with the popular Mexican game Lotería, a version of bingo using pictorial cards instead of letters and numbers.
Her colleague and former student, graphic designer Kseniya Galper, has generated an original sequence of corresponding Loteria cards that serve as labels to each of the paintings.
Galper and other members of the Suffolk community posed for many of the figurative works.
