Prof. Melanie Berkman's Suffolk Story

I chose to come to Suffolk nine years ago because teaching and mentoring students is my passion. I love interacting with students and helping them learn new things and accomplish their goals.

Suffolk students have that rare combination of passion and persistence—often referred to as grit—that allows them to succeed despite any obstacles or challenges encountered. I am always amazed when I hear of each student’s story. One has a two-hour commute to school from the Cape, another has a 20-hour/week job in a veterinary office, another takes care of their sick parent, and another is the only person in their family to speak English or go to college. Despite, or perhaps because of, these challenges, they know how to rise to the occasion, get their schoolwork done, and be successful in the world.
