What Is a Co-Major?

A co-major is a field of study that must be completed alongside a primary major, allowing students to apply specialized knowledge—such as AI—directly within their chosen discipline. More comprehensive than a minor but more focused than a double major, a co-major is thoughtfully integrated with a student's major through applied coursework, internships, and capstone experiences that connect classroom learning to real-world practice.

Here, Boston is your classroom and your workshop. Through hands-on, interdisciplinary projects, you'll take on the kinds of problems these organizations are wrestling with right now—modeling the spread of environmental pollutants, finding patterns in public-health data, helping a legal team with a massive document review.

Curriculum

An applied AI co-major lets you combine your passion with a powerful new skill set. Designed to be completed alongside your primary major coursework, the seven-course curriculum teaches you how to apply artificial intelligence as it relates to your chosen field, with hands-on experience prioritized.

Complete an Interdisciplinary AI Capstone

Apply AI to your major by solving a real challenge in your field through a culminating interdisciplinary capstone project.

Required Core

Foundations of AI (3 or 4 credits)
An introduction to the fundamentals of artificial intelligence

AI Regulation & Policy (3 credits)
Emerging U.S. and European frameworks, risk, data ownership, and algorithmic decisions

AI Ethics & Society (4 credits)
Fairness, bias, and the legal, social, and environmental implications of AI 

Applied AI Capstone (3 or 4 credits)
A discipline-specific, deployable AI solution and implementation plan 

AI-Based Internship (3 credits)
Required internship in your chosen field in which at least 50% of the work uses AI 

AI-Tagged Electives

Two AI-Applied Elective Courses (3-4 credits each)
Hands-on courses applying AI tools in your primary major or with an interdisciplinary focus
