Weekly Conference Honors for 3 Student-Athlete Standouts

Jennifer Ruys was named to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Weekly Women’s Basketball Honor Roll for the second consecutive week. Stanton Turner was named Rookie of the Week and Brandon Smolarek to the Weekly Honor Roll for the ECAC Northeast Hockey conference on Feb. 10.

Ruys, a senior forward, averaged 20 points per game in three contests last week. She recorded two double-doubles with 19 points and 10 rebounds in a double overtime Rams win over Johnson & Wales University, 61-57, and 28 points and 10 rebounds in a 74-71 setback to UMass Boston. Ruys also posted 13-points in Suffolk’s 67-34 win over Mount Ida. She is third all-time in Suffolk women's basketball history, with 1,401 career points scored.

Turner netted two goals and an assist in two games for the Rams last week. The freshman forward scored Suffolk’s first goal and added an assist in Tuesday’s 5-2 win over Salve Regina. Turner also scored his sixth goal of the season in Saturday’s 6-3 loss to Nichols College. He is sixth among first year players in the ECAC Northeast conference with 11 total points.

Smolarek, a sophomore goalie, put together a 44-save performance in the 5-2 win over Salve Regina. He improved his season record to 5-7-1 on the year. Smolarek is third in the league with a .924 save percentage in conference games.
