Members of Suffolk's Class of 2017 have given thousands of hours in community service during their undergraduate years in Boston, and, in a parting gesture, a team of seniors volunteered to help clean up the Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain.
The students raked, swept, picked up litter, removed invasive plants, and mended a dilapidated fence as they joined the Boston Parks Department for a spring cleanup at Bussey Brook Meadow.
“It is one of the most beautiful parks I’ve ever seen, and it felt good knowing that we helped to make it nicer,” said Brianna Silva, Class of 2017, who organized Suffolk’s cleanup team.
“When our work was done, we were in no hurry to leave,” said Silva, a broadcast journalism major. “We explored the park and bonded with one another.”
Service is essential to the Suffolk experience, said Alexandra Paterson, associate director of Student Leadership and Involvement. “What better way to end the college career for the Class of 2017 than with a service day activity. The Senior Week committee made it a priority to make sure there was an opportunity to give back to the community that gave them so much.”
