Suffolk University Law School will offer a summer program to a diverse group of undergraduate students who are interested in learning about legal careers through a three-year, $300,000 grant from the Law School Admission Council.

The DiscoverLaw.org Prelaw Undergraduate Scholars program at Suffolk Law School, or SU+PLUS, will host 20 freshmen and sophomores from groups historically underrepresented in the legal profession. These undergraduates will participate in an intensive four-week residential summer institute beginning in June 2012.

The students will learn fundamental legal skills and concepts. They will receive guidance about the law school application process and connect with student mentors enrolled in the Law School as well as legal professionals in the community.

“The SU+PLUS program will not only expose underrepresented undergraduate students to Suffolk Law School’s nationally ranked clinical law, trial advocacy and legal writing programs, but it also will engage them with the legal communities in the State House, courts, law firms and non-profits,” said Keren Zuniga McDowell, director of the University’s Office of Academic Access and Opportunity, who will direct the program in collaboration with Law School faculty members and administrators.

Suffolk Law School’s PLUS summer program is designed to motivate and train a diverse group of undergraduates interested in entering law school and the legal profession.

“The Law School strongly feels that all members of our society should be represented in the legal profession, and we welcome this opportunity to engage with undergraduate students from varied backgrounds who want to learn more about the law and legal practice,” said Law School Dean Camille Nelson.
