Suffolk Law School has a long record of success in moot court competition, and this year has been no exception, with teams winning regional championships and garnering invitations to exclusive national competitions. 

The Law School hosted teams from seven other law schools and judges from across New England for the National Moot Court Regional Competition, where the Suffolk Law team of Jane Haviland, Ferenc Karoly, and Dave Soutter dominated. 

The Law School team won all four rounds, defeating Roger Williams, Vermont Law, Syracuse, and Boston University in the finals. The team had the Best Brief, and Soutter was selected as the Best Advocate in the finals. The team went to the Nationals in New York in January. 

Alumni involvement

Professor Julie Baker and alumnus Jason Valencia, who was a member of the team in 2002-2003 team, coached the Moot Court regional winners, with the assistance of alumni Matt Bove, Liz Kosterlitz Martino, Bryan Serino, Doug Ray, Tim Bolen, Tracy Flynn, Dan Sieck, and Alexis Theriault. 

Suffolk Law Moot Court teams have gone to the Nationals three times in the past five years.

National Trial Teams

Suffolk Law was invited to the National Institute for Trial Advocacy Tournament of Champions and the National Civil Trial Competition, both of which include only the top 16 trial advocacy training schools in the nation, based on multi-year tournament performance rankings.

Suffolk Law’s Tournament of Champions team – Benjamin Duggan, Amy Brooks, Treashal Kapadia and Norman Murray – finished sixth.

The National Civil Trial Competition Team – Alfred Knoll, Sara Yoffe, Jaclyn Ambriscoe, and Michael Phippen – made it to the Final Four semifinals, where it lost a close decision in the semifinals to the team that ultimately won the championship.

Labor and employment regional champions

In the ABA Labor and Employment National Trial Competition Boston Regionals, which included law schools from all over the Northeast, the Suffolk Law team of John Brooks, Bridget Regan, Brendan O’Keefe, and Anna Lindemann won the Regional Championship and competed in January in the National Championship in Miami. A second Suffolk Law team – Jonathan Carnes, Anna Murray, Mark Koch, and Kara Ryan – made it to the semifinals.
