Rams Athletes Bring Home Conference Honors

Four members of the University baseball team and a softball standout earned recognition from the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) for the 2012 spring season.

Seven tennis players also earned accolades following their championship season.

Baseball

The Rams baseball team, with a 20-22-1 overall season record, advanced to the GNAC Tournament finals for the fifth straight season before falling to St. Joseph's College of Maine, 7-6 in the championship game.

Taking home first-team All-Conference honors in baseball were pitcher Jhonneris Mendez, a junior, and sophomore infielder Jake Cintolo

Mendez made national news earlier this spring as he was named NCAA Division-III Pitcher of the Week following his April 7 no-hitter versus Lasell College.

Sophomore Devan Jones was named a second-team All-Conference selection as an infielder, and junior Chris Stanley was a third-team selection as an outfielder.

All-conference softball player

In softball, sophomore third base/catcher Erin McAndrews earned second-team All-Conference honors after leading the Rams in nearly every offensive category during the 2012 season.

Clean sweep for tennis

The men's tennis team swept the GNAC season awards, taking home seven honors after the Rams won the GNAC championship and finished 2012 with a 13-1 overall record.

Freshman Marc Winkler was named the conference's Rookie of the Year and was a first-team selection in both singles and doubles play.

Senior Chris Staley also was a first-team All-Conference selection in singles play.

Both Staley and Winkler were Suffolk's top doubles team in 2012 and earned first team All-Conference honors for a duo.

Rounding out the first team GNAC All-Conference selections were senior Albert Buruga and sophomore Aaron Lau.

Senior Harlan Strader earned second team All-Conference honors.
